Print Specialist - Print Press

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under general supervision, performs camera work, sets up and operates equipment to produce copies of business forms, reports, publications, and materials, and binds finished products. Performs other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This position, requires management of hazardous materials or waste and thus requires mandatory training in hazardous waste operations, hazardous materials spill response, and/or hazardous materials communication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The examples of essential functions listed below are representative but not necessarily exhaustive or descriptive and incumbent may be assigned other related functions not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Operates and maintains Ryobi 3304HA 4-color printing press and 1250 Multilith printing press with T-51 2nd color head.
  • Maintains, adjusts and repairs presses and machines.
  • Operates and maintains Digital Platemaker to produce negatives film or polyester plates for reproduction of forms or publications.
  • Operates, maintains and applies the proper chemicals to Rapid Access Processor to develop negative film.
  • Operates and maintains NuArc Metal Halide Exposure System for transferring film image to plates.
  • Assembles print job according to customer’s specifications including folding, collating, stapling, padding, hole-punching, and/or numbering; and packages final job for pick up.
  • Sets up, operates and maintains electric paper drilling machine to punch or drill holes.
  • Operates and maintains electric paper cutter.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Staples sets of books, correspondence, and other items using electric stitched or manually operated stapling machines.
  • Cleans equipment, washes tubes, sinks and floors and ensures printing room is left in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Operates Xerox black and white and/or color copies.
  • Operates Scan Master, computer and applicable software.
  • Submits complete printing specification form indicating total labor and material used on job.
  • Sets up and maintains Padding Waggon to pad printed or discarded paper materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience Three years of printing, binding and print shop operation and safety procedures experience.
  • Direct and equivalent printing, binding and print shop operations experience may be substituted for required education at a ratio of two years of experience for one year of education.
  • Licensing A valid driver’s license issued by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge Safe work procedures in operation of print shop equipment, materials, and processing methods used in producing offset printed matter; multilith ink varieties; paper stock varieties; electric or manual paper cutter, various methods of binding, hole-punching; using proper personal protective equipment.
  • Skills/ Abilities Read, understand and interpret OSHA safety rules.
  • MSDS, operating and maintenance instructions, manuals and District policies and procedures; set up and operate equipment used in printing work such as offset and digital platemaker, to produce copies of forms, reports, publications, and other printed matter; work with film developing solutions and agents.
  • Produce masters on negatives/plates used in offset process for producing printed materials; understand chemical MMSDS, safety work rules and regulations; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of standardized situations; ability to interpret and follow material safety data sheets (MSDS);
  • Interpret written, oral diagram or schedule form instructions; be prompt and regular in attendance; clean, adjust and make minor repairs to equipment; maintain master, negative and printing plate files; prepare material and labor cost estimates; and work courteously and cooperatively with District employees.
  • Tools and equipment Used Adjustable wrenches, screw driver, allen wrenches, open-end wrenches, pliers, hammer, scraper, scissors, rachet and sockets, lubricants, roller, stapler, punch, multilith off-set presses, electric paper cutter (industrial size), electric jogger, electric 10-bin tower collator, paper tape dispenser, shrink wrap and heating gun, flip-top plate maker, electro-envelope feeder, numbering and perforation attachment, developing fluids and rinsing solutions, folder, digital plate maker, light table, cleaning agents, paper stock varieties and qualities and multilith ink varieties. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently work within a print shop environment which is well-lighted with climatically controlled temperatures and circulating air; the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts; the employee is frequently exposed to vibrations; the employee is frequently exposed to fumes and airborne particles.

The employee is frequently exposed to toxic and caustic chemicals; the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; the employee is occasionally exposed to electric shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and work in dimly lit film-developing room.
