Director of Business Development
Location: Montgomery, IL | Salary Range: $129,000–$172,000

A national construction services firm is seeking a Director of Business Development to lead growth initiatives across key markets, including industrial, manufacturing, power, healthcare, and commercial sectors. This role will focus on cultivating new business opportunities while maintaining and expanding relationships with existing clients and partners. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with a strong background in AEC, client engagement, and market expansion.


Key Responsibilities

Client & Market Engagement (80%)

  • Represent the firm’s services and capabilities with clients, community groups, and industry organizations.

  • Develop and maintain high-value relationships with clients, A/E firms, and trade partners.

  • Attend industry events, conferences, and trade shows to identify opportunities and strengthen partnerships.

  • Understand client goals and market drivers, providing solutions that align with their objectives.

  • Actively participate in local professional and community organizations to expand influence and visibility.

  • Address client concerns promptly, seeking feedback to drive service improvements.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities aligned with both short- and long-term growth strategies.

Strategic Business Planning (20%)

  • Develop and execute regional business development plans aligned with sales and client retention goals.

  • Lead proposal, qualification, and interview processes in collaboration with internal teams.

  • Manage and track the business development budget; measure ROI and adjust strategies accordingly.

  • Facilitate client- and market-specific strategy sessions and reporting.

  • Conduct market and competitor research to inform strategic decisions.

  • Collaborate with marketing teams on messaging, branding, and PR initiatives.

  • Use CRM tools to track relationships, leads, and business development activity.


Industry-Specific Focus Areas

  • Network with capital project leaders within food & beverage, pulp & paper, and heavy industrial manufacturing sectors.

  • Maintain strong connections with design engineers, OEMs, trade partners, and construction partners.

  • Understand client-specific safety, cost, and scheduling requirements.

  • Experience working in union and non-union environments preferred.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field (MBA preferred)

  • 7–10 years of experience in business development within the AEC or professional services industry

  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and presentation skills

  • Active involvement in AEC or community organizations

  • Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities

  • Willingness to travel as needed; valid driver’s license may be required


Working Conditions

  • Office-based role with some travel for events and client meetings

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required

  • May involve extended periods of sitting and regular use of a computer and office equipment


Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $129,000–$172,000, depending on experience and location
